Kvickfinn - Cultivator for mechanical weed control and light tillage

Manufacturer : Soil and Seed Equipment

Kaarle Tavela, the winner of the 2024 KM-Satosatellite Economics section, swears by Kvickfinn. ”This is the last machine I would give up as a farmer”

Kvickfinn - The best cultivator for mechanical weed control and light tillage

Soil and Seed Equipment Scandinavia AB has already manufactured more than 450 Kvickfinn conditioners and sold them in Scandinavia, the Baltic countries, Germany, France, Japan and now Canada. The machine is available in three different types, Rotor, Bio and Premium. There are 11 different models on the market. You are sure to find a model that meets your needs in our wide range. The Bio and Premium models allow you to easily remove the rotor from the cultivator and use it for stubble cultivation, etc.

How does Kvickfinn work?
The Kvickfinn cultivator is a combination of a wide goose-leg cultivator and a power-driven rotor. It is capable of single-drive capillary cutting, cutting roots to the desired depth, lifting the crop up and separating soil and plant debris, root and all, to the surface. The rotor's spring-loaded tines grip the plant and its roots, shaking the soil loose and, in the air, the heavy soil mass is separated at the bottom and the light plant waste is left on the surface to die. Sunlight and wind dry them out to make them unfit for growth and the plant mass forms a shade layer to prevent seed sprouts from germinating and a moisture barrier. Worms and soil micro-organisms rapidly eat and decay surface plant debris, such as forage plants.

All models are manufactured with standard 16 mm spring-loaded pins. They gently lift even short roots to the surface. In particular, it is not advisable to tear the roots of the valvati into small pieces and shape them in the soil in late autumn, because then the valvati and thistles will spread vigorously the following spring. As an alternative to standard prickly pear, you can choose strong, rigid HD rotor prickly pear. They grind hard soil like a tiller and are thus able to break up the grass surface, for example. The problem with clay soils is if the roots of the ryegrass get caught in the large soil blocks, they will survive. HD spikes can chop the root system too much and so easily leave small root fragments in the ground. To avoid this, the rotation speed can be reduced.

In conventional production, farmers using direct sowing or light tillage may have problems with perennial weeds. Many weeds have now become resistant to pesticides. To avoid resistance, farmers need to extend weed control to mechanical means. Kvickfinn is one step towards reducing herbicide use and diversifying weed control. We also recommend conventional farms apply Kvickfinn treatments for weed control once or twice in early spring before planting. Kvickfinn HD spikes as the sole tillage application before autumn sowing are highly effective. You get a ready-to-plant seedbed at once.

Finishing the autumn treatment with Kvickfinn before winter sets in will guarantee results.

Kvickfinn in the Luken test has been the most effective machine for controlling perennial weeds such as spring wheat and various deep rooted weeds such as thistles, up to 98 % with 1 ½ months of short rotation in early summer. The yield potential of cereals is increased because the soil is free of weeds and well fertilised.

Kvickfinn can significantly reduce the time required for open-fertilisation throughout the growing season. A full season set-aside, which is highly dependent on weather conditions, can be replaced by a shorter and more efficient 1-2 month early season set-aside, over which early barley or oilseed rape, for example, can be sown. Post-emergence fertilisation can be used to weed the grass after the first harvest and keep the fallow period short. This is an effective way to take advantage of the heat and dry spells in July. Kvickfinn is then very effective against deep-rooted weeds. In the autumn, autumn cereals or rape can be sown.

If you're looking for a powerful machine for harvesting crops, we recommend the Premium 4400 HS HD. It is capable of 2-5 cm shallow capillary clearance, collector weed stopping and seedbed preparation, and mechanical weed control to boot.
