Combcut - Mechanical weed control
Manufacturer : Soil and Seed Equipment
Combcut has been developed for selective mechanical weed control in crops such as cereals and grass, but can also be used to cut weeds growing above other crops. Combcut works best at eradicating valvate and thistle, but can also be used on, for example, overwintering weeds in autumn cereals, dandelions in grassland and other weeds with a faster growth rate that emerge on top of the crop.
The Combcut is similar to the table of a combine harvester, but the main difference is that the blades are stationary and the selective power is based on the adjustment of the blade clearance. It has to be adjusted to suit the crop and weeds being cultivated, so that what is saved passes between the blades without damage, but the weeds are cut. The top reel acts like a capstan, keeping the blade clean so that the crop passes through the blade as smoothly as possible.
How should I use Combcut?
The recommendation is to start early with Combcut and mow several times to prevent flowering. Work is most successful when the stem of the crop is soft and the weed stem is hard. The Combcut has a knife attached to a metal rod with a hole in the rear end and the vegetation passes between the blades.
Hardy weeds are cut, but the leafy crop passes through unharmed. The blade clearance and angle can be adjusted to suit the situation. The manual describes different situations based on growth rate and weed situation, with basic settings to start with. More detailed adjustments are still to be made in the field. This will accurately achieve herbicide-like selective weed control.
